Why habits matter ?
Your identity emerges from your habits. You are not born with preset beliefs. Every belief, including those about yourself, is learned and conditioned through experience.
So after repeating a story to yourself for years, it is easy to slide into these mental grooves and accept them as a fact. For example:
- I am not good with technology
- I am not a morning person
- I am bad with numbers
- I am always late
You become to believe that you are really that person and there is a internal pressure to maintain your self-image and behave in a way that is consistent with your beliefs. You find whatever you can to avoid contradicting yourself. So if you say “I am not good with technology” and you want to start an online business, you will never believe that it is possible to you. Or if you keep repeating to yourself “I am not a morning person” then getting into a morning routine will never be something possible to you.
I have some good news for you 🙂
You can change your habits. The first thing that you have to ask yourself is: “Who is the type of person that could get the outcome I want?”. For example:
- “Who is the sort of person that can become a successful digital entrepreneur?” It’s probably someone that are willing to learn skills, dedicated, consistent.
So, if to be more dedicated you now need to wake up 2 or 3 hours earlier to have more time to study but you don’t consider yourself a “morning person” then you know you have to change this “old habit” and acquire a new one.
And to do it, , you just need to start proving to yourself that you can do it. How? By doing SMALL steps, little changes to get some wins and prove to yourself that you can. You have to change your beliefs about yourself.
When you start to see over and over that you can wake up 15, 20 then 30 minutes earlier than usual you will start to believe that it is possible. But it is important to start with SMALL steps, not big ones because otherwise a little change becomes a massive sacrifice and it’s not sustainable over time. You must see progress in what you are doing so that’s the reason of starting with small changes.
So the real reason why habits matter is not because they can get you better results (although they can do that), but because they can change your beliefs about yourself.
Remember: You become your habits.
For me, I realized that to become the person that have the financial freedom I was looking for, I needed to become more laser focused in getting the systems from my business right. And to do that I needed to cut the “fluff” from my day, like spending hours on the phone with my mom or friends (specially during the lock down period) and use my time wisely. I slowly reduced the amount and time of those calls and started to study more. Dedicating more time in what really matters to put me one step forward the financial freedom I want.
I then started to believe that I could do it and saw progress. This excitement to believe that I can do it became a new habit that is sustainable and aligned to the person what I want to become.
So ask yourself: Who would you like to become? List the habits that your “new you” needs and start setting small changes to your “old habits”. You will then start to see progress and possibilities ahead of you!
